News n.8 - Summer 2005
World of bicycles
the star of next summer's season will be the bicycle. Clean, ecological and fun, your bike has become practically a requisite for a beautiful vacation in our mountains. Plus, this year we'll be cheering on the 88th Giro d'Italia and World Mountain Bike and Trail Championships.
More than ever, two wheels represent strength and effort, freedom and pleasure. The cyclists in the Giro will disappear up steep slopes while mountain bikers pedal along the tracks of the Cancano Lakes and the Vallaccia. Amateurs can take to the trails of the Val Viola or the Val Mora, guided by GPS, a new way to get nearer to the hills and their lovely silence, far from the smelly exhaust pipes that threaten even the air on an alpine pass. Bikes also symbolize peaceful protest against the overbearing dominion of automobiles, and we provide them free to our guests both for outings into the Livigno valley and for shopping jaunts at our stores. Here a bicycle is sport, relaxation and one of many forms of transportation, but in many countries it is really the only alternative to hoofing it. From China to Nepal, from Niger to Malawi, for millions of people bikes do it all: the livelihood of the rick-shaw man, transport to market for the produce of tiny garden plots, school buses for Indian children and means of communication for remote villages as yet unconnected to cell phone networks.
You'll find this and more in the extraordinary exhibit World of bicycles, il mondo che pedala, brought to town by Lungolivigno with its direct contribution to the campaign Ribiciclando by Fratelli dell'Uomo, which collects used bikes for the world's poorest countries.
Lungolivigno wishes you a happy summer, and a healthy and natural one - astride your bicycle, of course.
