When you ski in Livigno, you are obliged to make choices. There are 115 km of well-maintained slopes on the two opposing sides of the valley that contains the river Spöl. So these choices are not easy, but are rather definitive for any given day. On one side is Monte Sponda with a ski area anchored by the Mottlino gondola lift. On the other side is the Blesaccia, where the Carosello 3000 leads to another entire group of ski runs. The best times to avoid the crowds are January, right after the year-end holiday rush, and March, when the daytime sun and nighttime freeze makes for great skiing off the beaten track. Cross-country ski enthusiasts have plenty of choice too, but simpler. 40 km of track on the valley floor include easy loops with little change in elevation and exciting courses that rise and fall along the skirts of the valley walls. On December 18 the main track will become the scene of the 16th annual Sgambeda, the international cross-country marathon that opens the winter holiday season. This event puts skiers' legs and lungs to a serious test over a course covering 42 km at high-altitude; those not in top shape can step out with pride upon reaching intermediate finish lines at the 16 or 26 km marks.
The best way to get to the center is in an old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh, with the silence only broken by the muffled clip-clop of hooves on the snow. But it's also nice to walk down the path along the river until you reach the pedestrian zone in town. And then on to the Lungolivigno boutiques - Da Giuseppina, Renna Sport and Connaction - that offer in January a preview of the spring and summer fashions for 2006.
Plus, these shops lay on special service for guests at Lungolivigno hotels: mending in 24 hours, delivery of purchases to the hotel and the assistance of an expert fashion consultant.
Wellness of body and mind
The 900 m2 wellness center at Lac Salin Spa & Mountain Resort is also open to non-residents! Guests from the Concordia and the Paré Hotels are welcome to relax in the sauna, whirlpool, tropical shower and Kneipp bath - before taking a dip in the spacious pool. You'll find techniques that come from the Far East, like Ayurveda and Shiatzu. Plus purifying and toning treatments that employ products by Maria Galland, the most exclusive in European cosmetics. Not to mention massages bound to Livigno's popular tradition, using essential oil from the arnica that blossoms in the alpine pastures, or feloy resin drawn from the trunks of conifers that line the sides of our valley.
